How to Convert a Gas Driven Car to Electric Vehicle (EV)

tags: electric vehicle, Electric Vehicle Conversion\

Many vehicle owners are wandering how to convert a gasoline driven car to run purely on electricity. There are many advantages to owning an electric vehicle (EV). It is cheaper to run and cost less to maintain. Many car owners are seriously considering to get an EV back in mid 2008 when gas price was at its peak. Unfortunately, a new electric car from the manufacturer is still quite expensive. A good quality and practical EV is selling at a price range of $40,000 and above. Many people would not be able to afford it. As an alternative, many EV enthusiasts are converting conventional automobile to run on electric power via a Do It Yourself (DIY) conversion project at home.

The process of EV conversion is actually very simple. The main procedure is the removal of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and replacing it with a DC electric motor. When the ICE is gone, all its connecting components such as the gas tank, fuel distribution system, fuel pump, exhaust pipe and radiator are to be taken out as well. To transfer force, the motor is linked directly to the existing transmission units.

Since an EV runs on electric power, you will need to use lead acid batteries. This is because this kind of battery is readily available and not too expensive. A normal sedan electric car would require 10 to 15 units of battery. On a full charge, you can drive the EV for about 150 miles before you have to recharge. To extend the mileage, you can install more battery units in the power system or reduce the weight of the car. To save cost, you can always use recycled or reconditioned battery.
